The Different Types of Shipping Containers

-22.07.2026

The Right Container for Every Type of Cargo

In maritime and multimodal transport, choosing the right container is a key step. Every type of cargo has its own requirements in terms of volume, security, temperature control, and regulatory compliance. Selecting the appropriate container helps ensure safe transportation, compliance with industry standards, and cost-efficient logistics.

At Jontrans, we support our customers in transporting a wide range of container types, suited to both standard goods and highly specialized cargo.

Standard Containers: Dry and High Cube

The Dry Container is the most widely used shipping container worldwide. Fully enclosed and weatherproof, it is designed to transport dry, non-perishable goods such as pallets, cartons, industrial equipment, and manufactured products.

The High Cube (HC) Container offers the same features as a standard dry container but with an additional 30 cm (approximately 1 foot) of height. This extra capacity makes it particularly suitable for bulky cargo requiring additional loading space.

Containers for Specialized Cargo

Some types of cargo require purpose-built container solutions:

  • The Open Top Container, featuring a removable roof, allows cargo to be loaded from above. It is ideal for oversized items such as industrial machinery and heavy equipment.
  • The Flat Rack Container, with no side walls, is specifically designed for out-of-gauge cargo, including construction machinery, steel structures, and oversized industrial equipment.
  • The Reefer Container is equipped with a refrigeration system to maintain a controlled temperature throughout transit, making it suitable for food products, pharmaceuticals, and other temperature-sensitive goods.

Containers for Liquids and Sensitive Products

The Tank Container is specially designed for transporting liquids, gases, and chemicals under strict safety standards. It complies with international regulations governing the transport of hazardous and regulated materials.

The Ventilated Container promotes air circulation to reduce condensation and protect moisture-sensitive goods such as coffee, cocoa, and agricultural products during transport.

Expertise in Container Transport

Choosing the right shipping container depends on the nature of the cargo, its technical requirements, and the applicable regulations.

With extensive expertise in container transport, Jontrans supports customers in managing both standard and specialized freight flows across France and internationally. Our commitment to safety, reliability, and service quality ensures tailored logistics solutions for every shipment.
